Yo what’s going on guys? Today I am hereto bring you another video about my life in American high school, and my topic todayis about the culture. I want to share my thoughts towards cultures with you.

After coming to the US, I found thiscountry very different from my motherland, China.

Here is an interesting example.

Once during history class, the teacher wasdiscussing about an identity named “Harambe”, and people started saying “RIPHarambe”. I was really confused and asked one of my friends, “Who is that guy?”He was very surprised of me not knowing this, because everyone else knew thisinformation from somewhere. The truth was: during late May of 2016, achimpanzee named Harambe in Cincinnati Zoo was trying to save a child who fellinto a river in the animal zone. One of the zoo workers shot Harambe and killedhim to save the child. This incident was known for almost everyone, however Iwas sadly not informed.

Here is one another example of me notunderstanding the culture of America. During school dances, when pop or rapsongs come up, everyone seems to know all of the footsteps and all. However Ihave not either watched the music video on YouTube or listened to it on Spotilybefore, therefore I was clueless when the music was up.

Maybe this is the gap between me and myfriends. No doubt that cultural differences are standing between me, my friendsand others, and ignorance towards their lives are making you saying awkwardthings and not getting their points…

All these kinds of things made me sad andembarrassed in the beginning, but I made it through. I am not saying that Iunderstood the western American culture well, but at least I put my effort intoit, and I tried my best. I didn’t live my first 12 years in this country, so Ithink that it is really not that shameful to not know things. And in thisvideo, I am going to share my life stories with you, so that when you go to andlive in a different country, you will at least know a little better at startinga normal life and get along with your friends.

One of the important things I concluded,is to treat them like normal. Don’t think people in America and other country areopen, weird, and tall and strong (even though some of them are like that),everyone is different, everyone has different personalities and thoughts, sothink through what you are going to say before talk it out.

I know a lot of people who have divorcedfamilies, including one of my first friends I made. I still remembered when Itold him: “It must be unfortunate and sad for you to have your parents apart.”He told me that he is living a happy life now. Parents are good friends and heeven gets to live in two homes! Now it is way better than his parents didn’tget divorced.

These examples above are just very fewthings that happened in my life. After countless awkward conversations andsituations I encountered because of lack of knowledge of this culture, Irealized that it was needed to be actively engaged more.

Like I said above, there is no shame ofnot knowing something of their culture, because you didn’t spend your first tenyears in their place. Don’t be afraid of asking them questions too. You will behappy to answer questions from a foreigner about Chinese culture when you arein China, right? I am sure that the Americans will feel the same way too!

Another thing is: don’t make stereotypes.Never make your complete impression of one just because something they havedone. I used to not talk to a particular person just because that person waswearing something that I do not like to see. However, after a chance of gettingto know that person deeper and better, I now know that he was a kind person, and a great friend as well.

In addition, travel! One of the best waysto experience and understand other cultures is to actually live among them. Itmight take a while to save for, but planning a trip overseas to a countryyou’re interested in can be the best way of opening yourself up to newcultures.

The last thing here is, interact with yourfriends, enjoy various activities with them, and talk to them about their oryour concerns, and share your life experiences with them. I am sure that mostof them are willing to listen and enjoy the time being with you.

Till now, I still have a lot of things tolearn about this culture, and I often make awkward conversations too! However, there is no stop for learning, so I watch many movies, read books, and TV showsduring free time, but I know that these are just basics. People I know and talkto, are more important than anything else.

Alright, let’s end it here today, thanksfor watching guys, if you have thoughts about my video, leave a like andcomment, and I will see you next time.
